Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant explosions shaking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israel that it had conducted a preventative military action.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, two plumes of dense smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency stated, though it did not initially offer further details.
Context: Rising Tensions and Prior Developments
The incident occurs against a background of sharply increased tensions in the Middle East. Key events preceding this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with suggestions of further talks planned.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They rejected claims about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation is fluid, with further updates anticipated as events unfold.
