Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Vehicles, walls and postboxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.

Law enforcement say they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.

The liquid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Officers then located many other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Officials say preliminary tests indicate the fluid was most likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; officials are currently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they stated.

Local authorities announced they were working "to solve the case" and have asked to the public for tips.

A high-ranking political figure stated the incident rendered him stunned and required to be addressed promptly.

"This event hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on online, recalling the death of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
